The "Oak Shell" is a truly unique sculpture that captures a precise moment in time and natural history. The material itself tells a compelling story of resilience and transformation.
The oak timber used for this piece originates from a magnificent ancient tree grown in Norfolk, which tragically fell during the powerful Storm Desmond. This oak possesses a highly prized, rich 'brown oak' hue, which is not a stain, but the natural result of the Fistulina hepatica (Beefsteak fungus) interacting with the heartwood over time. This process creates the unique and beautiful variations of color you see in the finished sculpture.
The abstract, flowing form of the piece is directly inspired by a small keyhole limpet shell discovered during a walk on the atmospheric Holkham beach. The artist has captured the organic lines and delicate strength of the natural form, translating the coastal inspiration into a permanent, tactile wooden sculpture.
This piece is more than just a sculpture; it is a convergence of ancient timber, fungal biology, coastal inspiration, and dedicated craftsmanship.
